Naturalization The general requirements for becoming a US citizen through naturalization include: • applicant must be at least 18 years old • must have a green card for at least 5 years. Married applicants to US citizens need only be a lawful permanent resident for 3 years. If you are in the US as a refugee or asylee, you need the full five years of permanent residency • Must be a personal of good moral character (not be in trouble with the law, police or other authorities) • The applicant must be able to speak, read, and write English at a basic level. there is an exception if you are 55 years or older and have had a green card for 15 years or, you are 50 years or older and have had a green card for 20 years • The applicant must be able to pass a test on US History and government • The applicant must swear loyalty to the United State of America.
In addition to the above criteria, an applicant will be required to appear for an interview before an examination officer of the Immigration Service and must go through a series of background checks.
